Two Dead In Weekend Accident

Two victims of a fatal crash on Highway 17 have been identified.

Dryden OPP say that 13-year-old Cheyanne McLaughlin from Nipigon and 31-year-old Dustin McLaughlin from Portage La Prairie, Manitoba died in Saturday night's crash.

Three other people were taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

The collision between a tractor-trailer and an SUV happened west of Vermillion Bay and closed the highway for nine hours. 

Part-time College Workers Vote To Unionize

Part time College staff across Ontario will be joining the Ontario Public Service Employees Union.

Results of a vote conducted back in 2016 reveal 84 per workers support the move.

The College Employer Council had tried to keep kept ballots from being counted until now, claiming the union had not signed up enough workers to warrant the vote.

OPSEU President Warren Smokey Thomas calls it a magnificent victory.

KACL Receives Funding For Housing Improvements

A couple of northwestern Ontario agencies will benefit from a provincial program aimed at upgrading the homes of people with developmental disabilities.

A total of three-million dollars is being doled out across Ontario.

In the northwest, the Kenora Association for Community Living is getting 48-thousand.

Community Living Atikokan will receive 24-thousand dollars.

Saints Shutout Sioux Lookout

The Thomas Aquinas girls hockey team is entering the exam break on a bit of a roll.

The Saints shutout the Queen Elizabeth Warriors last night at the Kenora Rec. Center
6-0.

Chelsea Henderson led the scoring attack with a hat trick, while Faith Reid earned the
shut out.

The Saints don't return to action until January 30th against Beaver Brae.  

Thistles Split Against the Cougars

The Kenora Triple "a" midget Thistles split a pair of games against the Southwest Cougars over the
weekend.

The Thistles were doubled up 6-3 yesterday afternoon at the Kenora Rec. Center after blanking
the Cougars 6-0 Saturday night.

Jayme Caron had a three goal weekend, with one yesterday and two on Saturday. 

Jacob Frankcom also had a pair of goals in Saturday's blowout.

The Kenora Midgets are currently enjoying a five game home stand with their next action not coming
until next weekend against the Yellowhead Chiefs.   

Saints Girls Win Silver And Bronze At Winterblast Tournament

A couple of medals for local girls high school volleyball teams.

Thomas Aquinas won a silver and a bronze at the annual Winter Blast Junior and Senior girls Volleyball tournament.

The Saints lost to Westgate Collegiate in the final of the senior girls tournament Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Saints Junior girls beat their cross-town rivals from Beaver Brae for third place in the junior girls
tournament.

Fort Frances won the junior title taking down Dryden in the final. 

OPP Investigate Accident

The OPP are continuing to investigate a multiple vehicle accident just west of Vermilion Bay. 

The collision took place about 10 minutes west of the community around 6:30 last night.  

One lane of the Trans-Canada was finally re-opened around 1:30 this morning, and the road is now fully re-opened. 

The OPP have still not released any details about the cause of the accident or if anyone was injured. (File Photo)

HIGHWAY 17 Open to Single Lane West of Vermilion Bay

Highway 17 west of Vermilion Bay is open to single lane traffic after what OPP are describing as a multi-vehicle colision.

With the colision some 10 minutes west of Vermilion Bay, westbound traffic was being held at the village.

Meanwhile, Kenora OPP werestopping eastbound traffic at the Hwy 71 junction and detouring down 71 through Sioux Narrows to Hwy 11.

The highway was closed at about 6:30 and opened to alternating single lane traffic at about 1:30 am

Police have not released further details
